THIS NOVEL, WRITTEN BY A YOUNG FRENCHWOMAN, CHRISTIANE ROCHEFORT, WAS AN IMMEDIATE SUCCESS, A BEST-SELLER, AND WAS WELL RECEIVED CRITICALLY. WELL RECEIVED CRITICALLY. IT SUBSEQUENTLY WON THE AWARD CALLED "LE PRIX DE LA NOUVELLE VAGUE". THIS SUCCESS CAUSED THE AMERICAN PUBLISHER, DAVID MCKAY, TO PURCHASE RIGHTS TO IT AND IT WAS TRANSLATED INTO ENGLISH BY LOWELL BAIR AND PUBLISHED AS WARRIOR'S REST IN 1959. THE BOOK WAS WELL RECEIVED BUT NOT NEARLY SO ENTHUSIASTICALLY AS IT HAD BEEN IN ITS ORIGINAL VERSION. IN 1960 THE BOOK WAS REPRINTED BY FAWCETT (CREST) AS A PAPERBACK.

SOMEWHERE BETWEEN THE PUBLISHED FRENCH VERSION AND THE PUBLISHED ENGLISH (AMERICAN) VERSION, THE CENSORS' SCISSORS DID THEIR WORK. IN THE ORIGINAL FRENCH NOVEL IT IS THE STORY OF A LOVELY YOUNG FRENCHWOMAN WITH A HIGHLY LESBIAN BACKGROUND WHO INADVERTENTLY SAVES THE LIFE OF A BEATNIK-TYPE ALCOHOLIC MALE. HE HAS A
